Open to ages 16-21*
Garden Leaders will grow food for the community and sell and distribute food at the Southside Community Farmers Market. Garden leaders will also work with children and senior citizens in the garden. This is a great opportunity to learn urban gardening and farming skills as well as experience in building food security in Fairbanks.
*Preference will be given to applicants who live in the South Fairbanks neighborhood or have previously attended Hunter Elementary School. Black, Indigenous and people of color are encouraged to apply!
**Preference will be given to those between the ages of 16-21, however, we will consider applications from people outside of that age range.
Program Dates: May 21-August 14, 2025
Work Days:
- Mondays, Wednesdays & Thursdays: 9am-12pm
- Tuesdays: 9am-12pm and 3:00-7:00
Graduation Event: Saturday, August 16, 2025
Pay: $16/hour and a weekly veggie share
All Garden Leaders will receive a Community Roots Completion Certificate, certifying competence in community gardening, garden-based education and community food distribution.
Position Duties:
In this position, you will be part of a dynamic team, working together to do the following:

- Develop, prepare, plant and care for the Community Roots Garden in South Fairbanks
- Work at the Southside Market each week, sharing knowledge about vegetables and gardening as well as preparing and serving Community Meals at the market
- Work with children in the garden, exposing them to local food and connecting them with the outdoors
- Work with senior citizens in the garden and also visiting gardens at local senior housing
- Welcome visitors to the garden, including planning an Open House day for local leaders and the public

- Enjoys being outside
- Enjoys working on a team
- Eager to learn
- Doesn’t mind getting dirty
- Ability to get to the garden each day and the Southside Market
- All applicants must be current Fairbanks residents
Garden Leaders will need to come prepared each day with:

- Close-toed and durable shoes that you don’t mind getting dirty
- A hat to keep sun out of your eyes
- A pair of garden gloves to protect your hands while using tools
- A rain jacket for rainy days
- A water bottle to refill throughout the day as needed
