This workshop is hosted by Golovin Community Gardeners in collaboration with Rural Alaska Community Action Program, Inc. (RurAL CAP). It is focused on growing food for Bering Strait communities (farm or large garden) and open to growers of all skill levels from the Bering Strait and Yukon Kuskokwim regions. Travel and lodging expenses will be covered for all attendees. Instructors include UAF soil scientist Dr. Caley Gasch, Nome’s Cheryl Thompson (Master Gardener), and RurAL CAP’s Emily Becker (Master Gardener, Permaculture Designer).

The agenda will cover these topics:

  • Building healthy soil using local resources
  • Community-scale composting in rural Alaska
  • Community engagement – All attendees must plan to host and report on two events or gatherings (can be small) in your community to share knowledge.
  • Growing Vegetables
All expenses included – travel, lodging and food. You will also receive gardening supplies for use in your community. Babies and children of attendees are welcome at the event and welcome to stay in provided lodging, however there is no childcare provided and there are not funds available to pay for a child’s travel (unless they are a teenager who can participate and fulfill the requirements of the training).
Please note that lodging will be in the school, sleeping on the floor of a classroom. Make a note below if you need special accommodations and we will try to help!
