Managing type 1 diabetes ultimately comes down to understanding how food, activity, and lifestyle interact with your body. I will always appreciate the field of Nutrition as it provides super important information on how the body uses nutrients, and its support to diabetes management.

As for living in Alaska, it has reinforced an important lesson: a healthy lifestyle doesn’t require perfect conditions. Sometimes it simply requires learning how to adapt. And with this willingness to adapt, managing diabetes became less about restriction and more about curiosity and problem solving.

Food is basic infrastructure. This was a key message to our legislators. As important as roads and runways, food security is critical for a thriving state. And while a lot of good work has been done, there is much left to do.

Access to affordable land is one of the biggest hurdles facing farmers nationwide. In Alaska, this is magnified due to the limited quantity of land that is acceptable for agricultural production. Creating a workable leasing system for agriculture would lower barriers for new farmers, support existing farms in expanding, and help keep Alaska-grown food affordable.

Earlier this month, AFPC Programs Manager Ellen Olack had the opportunity to travel to Washington, D.C. to participate in the National Sustainable Agriculture Coalition’s (NSAC) Lobby Day.

Over the course of the conference, conversations kept circling back to a central message, that “farm to school” isn’t just a program, it’s a relationship between students and their food, between schools and local producers, and between health, culture, and place.

At the 2025 Alaska Agriculture Conference and Grazing Lands Symposium, over 250 farmers, ranchers, technical advisors, legislators, and more from Alaska and beyond gathered in Anchorage for three days of networking and learning about all things farming and grazing with the Alaska Farm Bureau and the Homer Soil & Water Conservation District.
