Food is basic infrastructure. This was a key message to our legislators. As important as roads and runways, food security is critical for a thriving state. And while a lot of good work has been done, there is much left to do.

Nationally, 1.2 million veterans rely on SNAP, with 4,000 in Alaska – an estimated 6% of all our veterans in the state. Families who serve and sacrifice for our country shouldn’t struggle to put food on the table.

On this War on Poverty Day we look to amplify those companies and community members who are helping support our most vulnerable community members in POW through food pantries.
At mid-October’s Alaska Federation of Natives (AFN) convention in Anchorage, we had the privilege of representing the Alaska Food Policy Council and sharing a booth with our friends from the Intertribal Agriculture Council.
As we observe Indigenous Peoples’ Day, we encourage everyone to engage more deeply with the efforts to support Indigenous food sovereignty. This day should be about more than symbolic recognition; it’s an opportunity to listen to Alaska Native communities, understand their challenges, and take meaningful steps to support their food systems.
