A town hall event was held in Kotzebue, Alaska on November 17th, 2025. The event was hosted by NW Arctic Takes Action and the Indigenous Outreach Program, with cuts in federal spending being the main driver of organizing this town hall. Food security was a heavy focus of the discussion that night, from issues of getting food out to the outlying villages, to how to deal with our dwindling caribou herd.

Nationally, 1.2 million veterans rely on SNAP, with 4,000 in Alaska – an estimated 6% of all our veterans in the state. Families who serve and sacrifice for our country shouldn’t struggle to put food on the table.
Farmers markets are game-changers when it comes to improving food access in communities. They not only bring fresh, locally grown produce to the forefront but also serve as vital hubs for nutrition assistance programs, making healthy food options more accessible to everyone.
The 33rd Session of the Alaska State Legislature adjourned shortly after midnight on May 15. The final hours were marked by intense activity, with language from stalled bills merging into moving ones. A lot of bills passed the Legislature addressing our food system – we’re excited to review the session alongside our 2024 policy priorities.
In January, Alaska decided not to participate in the 2024 USDA Summer Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) program, citing administrative costs that would outweigh the benefits. Forgoing the USDA Summer EBT program in Alaska exacerbates challenges faced by already strained food banks and pantries across the state.
