Alaska has benefited from significant investments in local food production through the USDA’s Local Food Purchasing Agreement (LFPA) programs. These initiatives—LFPA, LFPA+, Local Food for Schools (LFS), and Tribal LFPA programming—have provided business support to Alaska’s farmers, fishers, and other food producers while increasing access to fresh, locally sourced foods for schools, food pantries, and communities across the state. The Alaska Food Policy Council (AFPC) was awarded a $485K USDA Agricultural Marketing Service grant through the Regional Food Systems Partnership (RFSP) program to support implementing and expanding a statewide initiative to better connect public and private resources to plan and develop Alaska’s food systems. This project, supported by a generous match from the Division of Agriculture, will launch in early 2025.
AFPC just released a Request for Partnerships (RFP) to solicit applications from organizations or individuals to become Technical Assistance providers through Alaska’s Regional Food Business Center.
In January, Alaska decided not to participate in the 2024 USDA Summer Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) program, citing administrative costs that would outweigh the benefits. Forgoing the USDA Summer EBT program in Alaska exacerbates challenges faced by already strained food banks and pantries across the state.
